Current Situation and
Objectives
Up to 40% of homes in South use on-site or decentralized wastewater systems. With
more than 60 gallons of wastewater produced per person
per day, failed septic systems can be a major
contributor to nonpoint source pollution. Research and
education programs are needed to help homeowners
properly operate and maintain their systems and for
community leaders to better understand and evaluate
options for wastewater management. The objective of
this focus area is to support regional efforts to reduce
the number of failing on-site wastewater treatment
systems and the subsequent pollutant loading of surface
and ground water resources.
Expected Impacts of
Extension Program
-
Enhanced regional and multi-agency collaboration for
on-site research and education program development
and delivery
-
Increased knowledge and understanding by homeowners,
on-site system designers and installers, and
community leaders
-
Reductions in the number of improperly functioning
on-site wastewater treatment systems and contaminant
loading to surface and ground water resources.
